Dr Larry Albert Williams, 79



BENSON – Dr. Larry Albert Williams, DDS, at the age of 79, passed away on Wednesday August 18, 2021 at his residence surrounded by his beloved wife.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. on Sunday August 22 at the Benson Baptist Church. Dr Lawrence Powers and Dr Charles Royal will officiate. Private interment will be in Roselawn Cemetery in Benson. The service will be broadcast live on the Benson Baptist Church website at www.bensonbaptist.org.

Dr. Williams was born September 1, 1941 in Columbus County, North Carolina, to the late Judge Wilton Albert “Al” and Edith Belk Williams. He was predeceased by his sister, Sarah Williams Koonce. Dr Williams earned 13 athletic letters in four years of high school, before attending Mars Hill College for two years, in preparation for University of North Carolina dental school. He transferred to UNC during the summer of his freshman year and continued to be fortunate enough to be accepted into the dental school class of 1966. Dr Williams chose to settle in Benson after practicing as an associate in Greensboro, focusing primarily on occlusion. In February 1967, the practice began above the Kelly Department Store, and in 1975 moved across from Benson’s Post Office until his retirement in 2015.

Dr Williams was a member of the Academy of General Dentistry, the Dr LD Pankey and Dr Pete Dawson Institutes, and Master of the Academy of General Dentistry. His most notable recognitions have been the founding president of the North Carolina Academy of General Dentistry, president of the Academy of Dentistry International (over 64 countries), 4th district president of NCDS, president of the NCDS program and president of Johnson County Dental Society. He also established the dental library of the dental school of North Vietnam and gave great help to the library of the dental school of South Vietnam (Ho Chi Min City). He has served as president (chair) of the Carolinas section of the American College of Dentists. He also liked to organize Christian dental mission trips to Guatemala and Ukraine.

Dr. Williams’ community involvement including, but not limited to, the Benson Chamber of Commerce where he was Citizen of the Year in 1981, the Benson Mule Day committee for 29 years, and was also the home football timekeeper at South Johnston High School for 26 years.

Dr. Williams was a member of Benson Baptist Church in Benson, where he held many positions, including president of deacons. Like his father before him, he received the Order of the Longleaf Pine in 2016. His greatest loves were his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, his wife, his family, sailing, hunting, fishing, work wood and travel.

Survivors include his 56-year-old wife, Dottie Warren Williams; son, Warren Williams and wife Joy of Fuquay-Varina and Greg Williams and wife Helen of Raleigh; grandchildren, Thomas Warren Albert Williams, Rachel Merritt Williams, Mitchell Gregory Williams and Claire Robbins Williams; brother, J. Samuel Williams of Siler City; sister, Sybil Williams Gore Pope of Little River, South Carolina; brother-in-law, Henry Casper Warren and wife Barbara Jean of Raleigh; as well as several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank special caregivers Lisa Walker, Becky Allen, Tammy Ivey, Howard and Margaret Cross, and LaShonda Rodriquez.

Family will receive friends from 6 pm to 8 pm on Saturday, August 21 in the community hall at Benson Baptist Church, 200 W. Church St., and at other times at home.

In accordance with NC-COVID19 guidelines, the funeral home suggests following social distancing guidelines and the three W’s: wait, wash, and wear a face covering. Face coverings are not mandatory, but are kindly recommended for all departments.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials could be sent to Benson Baptist Church, PO Box 323, Benson, NC 27504.
