A big year for Daltons Wadkin

2021 has been a significant year for Daltons Wadkin-celebrating its 120-year anniversary, recording record sales in all departments, welcoming new staff members to the expanding team, being nominated for the prestigious Made in the Midlands award, became SCM’s official machinery partner, and opening an extended showroom and demonstration area.

Founded in 1901, Daltons Wadkin is the longest established supplier of woodworking machinery in the UK. Now under the watchful eye of fourth-generation family member Alex Dalton, the company is celebrating its 120-year anniversary against the backdrop of rising demand and a global pandemic.

“No dull days'” commented MD, Alex. “We, like most in the industry, are fortunate enough to be on a positive end to the pandemic. The demand for both new and pre-owned machinery has never been higher. Requests for operator training and contracts service is very demanding. I often think about what my late father and uncle did in all this … “

To help keep pace with demand and ensure continuity of service for its customers, Daltons Wadkin hired new staff in all departments. “We welcome both industry novices as well as seasoned professionals into our service, training and engineering departments,” Alex continued. “We have about 35 staff members now, and are looking for additional recruits in Q4 ‘”

The past year and a half has also had challenges. Like most businesses, Daltons Wadkin was affected by the arrival of Covid-19 and, in accordance with Government guidelines, was forced to close its doors in March 2020.

The true success and achievements of this business will depend on how it responds and adapts to the pandemic to stay up to date at an important time in its history – a fact recognized by a nomination for the Insider Media Made in the Midlands award.

Daltons Wadkin’s main strength is its relationships with leading European manufacturing specialists, and in 2021 a new partnership began between Daltons Wadkin and SCM.

“I have always admired the professionalism of the SCM brand,” enthuses Alex. “Their offering of high-quality, Italian-built machinery perfectly suits our current portfolio of solid wood- and panel-processing equipment. It’s still early days, but we’ve seen significant sales across the range, with new stock coming in almost every day ‘. ”

An impressive range of SCM equipment includes Altendorf panel saws, Elcon wall saws, Kimla CNC equipment, Salvador crosscut saws and Stenner band resaw at Daltons Wadkin’s Nottingham showroom. To allow enough space for the display of the large range of machinery on display, the showroom and demonstration area were spent an additional +50%.

“Demonstration is key for us. If viewed personally, the build quality, performance and advantages of the machinery we offer are immediately visible,” Alex said. “Our recent Wood & Panel Machinery Show is proof of this, and we continue to welcome anyone who wants to take advantage of our specialist services.”
